Introduction

A Primary Gas Cooler (PGC) is an essential part of a coke oven gas recovery system, designed to reduce the temperature of crude gas while removing impurities such as tar and naphthalene.   • Multi-Stage Water Supply – Allows chilled water, circulating water, and heating water to be used in different sections.

  • Spray Cleaning System – Ammonia water or condensate is sprayed on the tubes to remove tar and naphthalene deposits, ensuring continuous performance.

This configuration enables strong gas turbulence and even cooling, achieving an outlet gas temperature only about 2°C above the inlet water temperature.

Working Principle and Process

  1. Gas-Liquid Separation – Crude coke oven gas (~80°C) enters the separator to remove tar-ammonia water mixture.

  2. Upper Stage Cooling – Circulating water at ~23°C cools the gas to ~45°C.

  3. Lower Stage Cooling – Chilled water at ~16°C reduces gas temperature further to ~22°C.

  4. Gas Boosting & Purification – The cooled gas passes through a booster fan, then into an electrostatic tar precipitator for fine tar removal before entering the desulfurization and sulfur recovery units.

  5. Condensate & Byproduct Handling – Condensate, tar, and ammonia water are collected, recycled, or sold for industrial use.
