Horizontal Tube-Type Final Gas Cooler: The Last Step in Efficient Raw Gas Cooling

1. What Is a Final Gas Cooler?

The Final Gas Cooler is part of the primary gas cooling system, typically installed after the first-stage cooler. While the first-stage cooler reduces the raw gas temperature from around 700–800°C to approximately 150°C, the final gas cooler further reduces the temperature to 80–100°C, preparing the gas for stable downstream purification.

The horizontal tube-type design makes this cooler compact, easy to maintain, and highly efficient.

2. Working Principle

  1. Raw Gas Flow
Semi-cooled gas from the first-stage cooler enters the shell side of the heat exchanger and flows across the horizontal tube bundle.

  2. Cooling Water Circulation
Cold water circulates through the inside of the tubes, absorbing heat from the gas via indirect heat exchange.

  3. Heat Transfer and Tar Condensation
As the gas cools further, more tar and water vapor condense, enhancing tar recovery and improving gas purity.

  4. Discharge
The cooled gas exits the cooler and continues to purification units such as tar precipitators or chemical absorption systems.

3. Equipment Structure

  • Shell-and-Tube Configuration: A classic and proven design

  • Horizontal Layout: Suitable for ground-level installation with low height requirements

  • Tube Bundles: Made of carbon steel or stainless steel, selected based on the corrosion level of the gas

  • Removable Tube Sheets: Allow easy inspection and cleaning

  • Drainage Ports: Enable discharge of condensate (tar and water mixture)
