Stainless Steel Coil Heat Exchanger

A stainless steel coil heat exchanger is a compact, high-efficiency heat transfer device that uses coiled tubing (typically helical or spiral) to transfer heat between fluids. Owing to stainless steel’s corrosion resistance, pressure tolerance, and hygienic properties, these exchangers are widely used across industrial and commercial sectors.

1. Typical Configurations

  • Helical / Spiral Coil
Maximizes surface area in a small footprint; induces secondary flow to enhance heat transfer.

  • Immersion Coil
The coil is submerged directly in a tank or vessel (e.g., hot water tanks, chemical reactors).

  • Double-Pipe Coil
Coil-in-pipe arrangement for higher pressure duties.

  • Serpentine Coil
Common in boilers, furnaces, and waste heat recovery systems.

2. Common Materials

  • AISI 304 / 304L – General corrosion resistance, potable water, HVAC

  • AISI 316 / 316L – Improved resistance to chlorides, chemicals, seawater

  • AISI 310S / 321 – High-temperature applications

  • Duplex / Super Duplex – High strength and aggressive media (on request)

3. Key Advantages

  • High Heat Transfer Efficiency
Curvature creates turbulence, improving overall heat transfer coefficients.

  • Compact & Space-Saving
Ideal where installation space is limited.

  • Corrosion & Temperature Resistance
Suitable for harsh chemical environments and elevated temperatures.

  • Low Maintenance
Smooth stainless steel surfaces reduce fouling and ease cleaning.

  • Customizable
Coil diameter, tube OD/thickness, number of turns, and connection orientation can be tailored.

4. Typical Applications

  • Boilers & Thermal Oil Systems (preheaters, economizers)

  • Chemical & Pharmaceutical Processing

  • Food & Beverage (sanitary heating/cooling)

  • HVAC & Hot Water Systems

  • Oil & Gas (fuel gas heating, condensate heating)

  • Waste Heat Recovery (flue gas, process exhaust)
